At UC ICT Congress 2025, my team (Virginia May Wamsley, Jhoanne Claire Wamsley, and me) placed 3rd in the Lightning Pitch competition. We pitched a product concept to a panel of evaluators, up against teams from several UC campuses.

The Lightning Pitch format

A lightning pitch is a short, timed presentation where you have to get a product's value across before the clock runs out. It rewards clarity, pacing, and answering hard follow-up questions on the spot. How well you explain your idea counts for more than how technically impressive it is.

How we prepared

We built a tight story that went from problem to solution to impact. We opened with the real-world problem instead of technical details and tied the solution to concrete outcomes people could relate to. Then we rehearsed until the flow was automatic, so on the day the pressure made us sharper instead of making us panic.

Why developers should learn to pitch

Developers undervalue pitching. Being able to explain what you're building and why it matters in under two minutes is arguably as important as the technical work. People adopt a product once they understand what it does for them, and good engineering alone won't get them there.
